The coronavirus pandemic gripping the world has also been impacting the finances of the Royal Family. The lack of tourists visiting royal palaces has resulted in a massive decrease in money generated for the Queen’s Royal collection trust. Royal Rota podcast hosts, Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson discussed the impact coronavirus was ultimately having on the Royal Family’s income.

Mr Ship said: “With everyone stuck at home I think the finance thing is pretty interesting.

“There were various figures around and the Palace were careful to say don’t get stuck on this figure that has been reported, an £18million pound hit.”

He explained, due to the coronavirus lockdown, tourists are not visiting key Royal Family attractions.

He continued: “The bottom line is we shouldn’t really be surprised that the income from tourists visiting Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Palace of Hollyrood House, Clarence House and wherever else the Royal collection trust gets its income from isn’t coming in, the tourists are not there.

“The palaces are all closed indefinitely to the public so there is clearly going to be a coronavirus pandemic hit to the finances.”

Ms Robinson agreed and went into greater detail of how much the Royal Family helps bring in through tourism.

She said: “Of course, the palaces, like everything else, has been affected and has had to close

“You can’t have people gathering anywhere and you can’t have tourists going to see all these palaces and residencies.

“Last year they had 3.2 million visitors and that raised more than £72million for the Royal Collection which is a huge amount of money.”

Coronavirus has forced the palace to freeze projects and pay for members of staff in the Royal Households.

It was reported by the Sun Lord Chamberlain Earl Peel, the most senior official of the Royal Household, warned staff income is expected to fall by nearly £18million.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The whole country is very likely to be impacted financially by coronavirus and the Royal Household is no exception.

“However, the time to address this issue will be when the full impact of all the implications of the current situation is clearer.

“At the moment the attention of the Royal Household is on ensuring it follows all the guidelines and supports the national effort in combatting COVID-19.”

The pair also agreed the Royal Family, most notably the Queen, would have to behave differently post-coronavirus crisis.

The royal commentators said even as lockdown measures are relaxed, the Queen may still avoid large public gatherings due to the risks of the virus.
