Just two months in, 2022 is shaping up to be another dramatic year for the Windsors, with the family being rocked by loss, scandal and family feuds, all during the Queen’s seventieth year on the throne.

The Telegraph Cartoonist Matt Pritchett mocked the recent royal ongoing’s with a humourous cartoon drawing posted on Twitter.

The cartoon shows two firemen and a fire engine with the words: “Go and check that Windsor Castle hasn’t caught fire. The Queen is having one of those years…”.

In a speech marking her Ruby Jubilee in 1992, the Queen called the year an “annus horribilis” which is Latin for ‘horrible year’. It was a period characterised by several unpleasant events for the Royal Family.

It was the year Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated. Royal reporter Andrew Morton also released the controversial book ‘Diana: Her True Story that year, which shared secrets about Diana’s life in the family.

In the same year, Princess Anne officially divorced her first husband Captain Mark Phillips, and Prince Andrew separated from his then-wife Sarah Ferguson.

To top it off, a fire broke out in Windsor Castle in November 1992, destroying 115 rooms as well as many valuable items.

It has been almost three decades since the Queen summed up 1992 as an “annus horribilis” but the phrase has made somewhat of a revival this year as the monarch grapples with loss, setbacks and controversy among the firm.

Bitter family divisions and a disgraced Prince Andrew are now an established part of the Royal Family history.

Last year was one of the most dramatic on record for the Windsors. We saw Harry and Meghan take part in the infamous Oprah interview, the family faced a racism claim, Prince Andrew faced sex abuse allegations and the Duke of Edinburgh sadly passed away in April.

The start of 2022 hasn’t been much better for the sovereign as two of her closest lady-in-waiting staff died in December 2021, leaving the Queen to start the new year in mourning.

Since then, speculations have been ongoing around whether the Queen had tested positive for Covid following a meeting with Prince Charles, who after confirmed he had the virus.

As well as ongoing concerns over the Queen’s health, she has also been embroiled in the controversy involving her second youngest son Prince Andrew.

The family have been urged to “come clean” and reveal whether the Duke of York will receive financial assistance from the monarch to pay off his reported £12million settlement to Virginia Giuffre.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Queen might help pay her son’s legal bills using money from her private Duchy of Lancaster estate worth around £23 million.

Buckingham Palace has declined to confirm whether this will be the case.

The family are expected to experience further scandal this year with Prince Harry’s memoir set to be released in the run up to Christmas.

Royal experts have hinted that the Duke of Sussex’s autobiography would discuss his parent’s tumultuous marriage and potentially contain claims about Camilla.

The Queen has since expressed her wish that Camilla becomes Queen consort when Prince Charles is made King.

The announcement came on her official Platinum Jubilee on February 6.

This year will mark the Queen’s seventieth year on the throne, giving Briton’s the chance to celebrate the huge milestone over a four-day bank holiday weekend in June.
