Buckingham Palace confirmed that the monarch had sent a message via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for North Korea’s national day on September 9. According to state media, the nation received Her Majesty’s message on September 7.

State media KCNA said: “Kim Jong Un, president of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), received a message of greeting from Elizabeth II, queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on September 7.”

The Queen’s message said: “As the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea celebrate their national day, I send my good wishes for the future.”

However, days later North Korea said it had successfully test-fired what it described as newly developed long-range cruise missiles.

The long-range cruise missiles are seen by experts as possibly the country’s first such weapon with a nuclear capability.

And North Korea has carried out a second weapons test today.

South Korea said the nation fired a pair of ballistic missiles off its east coast.

Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga called the launch “outrageous”.

The US said the latest launches do not pose an immediate threat to “US personnel or territory, or to our allies”.

It comes amid deadlocked talks on denuclearisation.

The Queen has previously sent messages on North Korea’s national day, which celebrates the nation’s anniversary.

The monarch acts on the advice of the FCDO.

An FCDO spokesperson said: “As in previous years, HM The Queen has sent a message to the people of the DPRK on the occasion of their National Day.”

North Korea held a military parade in its capital Pyongyang overnight on September 9 in celebration of the nation’s 73rd anniversary.

State media published photos of marching rows of soldiers in orange hazmat suits.

It comes as the country is facing food shortages and an economic crisis.
