The Queen, who recently celebrated her 94th birthday, is known for her lavish lifestyle but her brightly-coloured wardrobe doesn’t have a budget. The Monarch also owns multiple royal residences which are said to be incredibly expensive to run as one expert described bills as ‘eye-watering’. The British taxpayer gives the Queen around £70million every year.

Speaking on Spending secrets of the Royal Family, the True Royalty TV narrator said: “Britain’s Royal Family is famed for its traditional ceremonies, dedicated service and lavish spending.”

One royal expert added: “Royal residences are incredibly expensive to run and the bills really are eye-watering.”

The narrator continued: “In an age of belt-tightening, their costs keep rising. The taxpayer now gives the Queen more than £70million every year.”

Another expert added: “There were very specific pieces interesting the Royal Family but there were no budgets.”

Royal butler Paul Burrell has also given insights on Her Majesty’s wardrobe which has its own room in Buckingham Palace.

The Queen stores her clothes upstairs and handpicks her outfits from sketches every morning.

Mr Burrell told Yahoo’s Royal Box: “She has to have her outfits brought down to her, all her clothes are kept on the top floor.

“Her dresser will bring down in the morning two outfits, which are sketched with pieces of material clipped to them so that the Queen can remember whether it’s silk or cotton or wool.

“The one the Queen picks is the one which is brought downstairs from up above so she doesn’t actually see her wardrobe with clothes in it.”

The 94-year-old is known for wearing brightly coloured outfits with matching hats designed by her dressmaker Angela Kelly or royal couturier Stewart Parvin.

The Queen wears bright colours to help her stand out in crowds and reflect her important role.

Royal expert Victoria Howard told Express.co.uk: “It’s not a ’look at me’ thing, it’s more about ‘people want to see me so I’m going to help them’, with crowds around. But yes, power move, I like that term.”

When the Queen doesn’t want an outfit anymore she will hand it to one of her dressers.

Author Brian Hoey wrote in his 2011 book Not in Front of the Corgis: “The Queen’s clothes are a constant source of comment in the media and she will wear a favourite outfit for years.

“When she finally tires of it, she will hand it to one of her dressers, who can either wear it or sell it.”
