Queen Elizabeth II: The secrets behind the Queen’s successful reign

Although the monarchy has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the last few decades, the Queen’s popularity has remained high throughout her reign. According to YouGov study of 6,782 respondents, the Queen is the most popular of all members of the Royal Family. Respondents have described her as admirable, hard working, respected, dignified and dedicated. Express.co.uk spoke to an expert about the reasons behind the Queen’s success as monarch.

Elizabeth II became Queen on February 6, 1952.

King George VI died at the age of 56, while the then-Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya on a royal tour.

Aged only 25, Elizabeth flew back to the UK upon hearing of her father’s death as Queen Elizabeth II.

In 2019, at the age of 93 the Queen remains an active member of the Royal Family.

The Queen attended 283 royal engagements in 2018 alone, and has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon.

In 2022, the Queen would be celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, commemorating an incredible 70 years on the throne.

Professor of British and Commonwealth History at the University of London, Philip Murphy, spoke to Express.co.uk about the success of the Queen’s reign.

And in terms of personal traits, Professor Murphy says the Queen’s “self-effacing” qualities have worked in her favour.

Professor Murphy said: “She has a tremendous sense of duty in terms of fulfilling endless numbers of rather boring, repetitious formal events, without ever appearing to find them tedious or showing displays of impatience or anger.

“And that’s not true of say Princess Margaret, it’s not true of the Duke of Edinburgh, who both have been quite temperamental in public at times.

“She has this terrific self control and that’s actually been a fantastic way of dealing with being in the spotlight.”

Professor Murphy points out how the Queen has never “played the game” of winning over the press or the public.

He added: “She’s never courted popularity, her popularity has generally been high.

“It’s gone up and down, it was very high in the early decades of her reign.

“By the 70s she’s starting to look a little bit stayed and establishment, and of course the monarchy had a dreadful time in the 1990s culminating in the death of Princess Diana.

“Now her popularity has bounced back because everyone can see she’s 93, she’s an extraordinary phenomenon, and she’s just been part of the nation’s life for such a long time.

“In a sense, she’s never played the game of manipulating press or public opinion.

“She’s sort of maintained this incredibly steady course throughout the years and ultimately, although there have been dips in her popularity, it’s served her very well.”
