In recent decades, many royals have opted to give birth in hospitals rather than at home. Princess Diana decided to give birth at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London, and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William would later welcome their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, at the same hospital. But traditionally members of the Royal Family tended to give birth in royal residences, and the Queen welcomed three of her four children into the world at Buckingham Palace.

Prince Philip – who died aged 99 on April 9, 2021 – and the Queen were married for more than 70 years, having tied the knot in 1947.

Following their marriage, over the course of 16 years the couple would welcome four children, starting with Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

Both Charles and Anne were born prior to their mother’s accession to the throne in 1952, and Charles was present at Westminster Abbey for his mother’s coronation.

The Queen and Philip later welcomed two more sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Although the Queen’s birthing experiences were in many ways traditional, some aspects of her royal births were quite unusual for the time.

The Queen opted not to allow the Home Secretary to be present for the births of her four children, as had usually been the case in previous royal births.

The Queen also decided to break with tradition when she gave birth to Edward by asking Prince Philip to be in the room.

In doing so, the Queen became the first royal woman to have her husband present when she gave birth.

Ingrid Seward wrote in her book, ‘My Husband and I: The Inside Story Of 70 Years Of Royal Marriage’: “The Duke of Edinburgh was actually holding his wife’s hand as their youngest was born on March 10, 1964.”

This has become more common in recent decades, and Prince Charles was in the room with Princess Diana to welcome Prince William and Prince Harry.

Prince Charles and Princess Anne

Prince Charles and Princess Anne are the Queen and Prince Philip’s first two children, and they are close in age.

Prince Charles was born on November 14, 1948, at the Buhl Room in Buckingham Palace.

Then-Princess Elizabeth was 22 years old when she had Charles, and he was delivered via Caesarean section.

Reports suggest Prince Philip wasn’t present for Prince Charles’ birth, and to pass the time he is said to have played squash at the palace while awaiting news of his son.

The Queen and Prince Philip’s only daughter, Princess Anne, was born on August 15, 1950.

Unlike her brothers, Anne was born at Clarence House due to post-war renovations being carried out at Buckingham Palace.

When Princess Anne was born, Princess Elizabeth was aged 24 and less than two years later she would become Queen.

Prince Andrew and Prince Edward

Almost 10 years after the birth of Princess Anne, the Queen gave birth to Prince Andrew on February 19, 1960 at the age of 33.

The Queen and Philip’s fourth and final child is Prince Edward, and he was born on March 10, 1964.

The Queen was aged 37 when she had Prince Edward, while Prince Philip was 42.
