Queen Elizabeth II, 94, is mourning the death of Prince Philip who passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle last Friday. While the Queen must be deeply saddened by the loss of her most trusted advisor and husband of 73 years, she is said to have found comfort in two new corgi puppies who arrived at Windsor Castle last month.

The Queen is well-known for her love of animals and her corgi dogs are iconic.

She received her first corgi Susan when she was 18 and went on to breed 30 or so more, all of whom were descendants of Susan.

In December 2020 the Queen suffered the sad loss of her corgi Vulcan after her last dog, Whisper, died in 2018.

However, the Queen was said to be delighted last month when she received the gift of two new corgi puppies.

The dogs were from a different line to Susan, and their names and genders are not known.

However, they are believed to be a great source of comfort to the widowed Queen during – what must be – a difficult time.

According to royal insiders, the Queen has turned to her two new puppies to help her cope with her loss.

The Queen’s dogs will take on even “greater significance” now that Philip has passed, a source told the Telegraph.

They added the pups will be a “welcome distraction” from her grief, and they will also “keep her company”.

Prince Philip was a well-known practical joker and is said to have once carried out a prank on the Queen which involved her corgis.

The Duke tried to impress a dinner guest by hiding one of the Queen’s corgis in a cupboard, a royal insider has claimed.

In 2019, a source told Express.co.uk: “Philip hid a corgi in a desk cupboard and when the Queen asked him where it was, he said he didn’t know.”

Philip’s prank backfired when the hidden pooch made a noise on hearing the Queen’s voice.

The insider added: “But then the dog whined after hearing the Queen’s voice, so Philip let it out and it ran to her.”

The trick prompted outrage from Her Majesty when she discovered what her husband had done.

According to the source, an unamused Queen told Philip to “stop showing off to guests” before leaving the room.

In his characteristically wry way, the witty Duke is said to have turned to the dinner guest once the Queen was gone and said: “Who does she think she is?’”

Prince Philip’s funeral will be held at St George’s Chapel in Windsor this Saturday at 3pm.

The ceremonial service will be pared back in keeping with COVID-19 restrictions.

This means the Queen may have to sit alone during the funeral in order to avoid mixing households indoors.

There will be a limit of 30 people allowed to attend the service and they are all expected to wear face masks.
