Today (June 2) marks the 67th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. On this day in 1953, the Queen’s coronation at Westminster Abbey became the first televised coronation of any British monarch, and millions around the world tuned in to watch the occasion. This year the anniversary of the coronation is no doubt being celebrated slightly differently by the monarch, who is at home with Prince Philip due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Any public celebration of the Queen’s coronation anniversary would not have been possible this year due to the current lockdown.

But the Queen no doubt had some cause to celebrate at home, as her horse won a significant race today.

First Receiver, owned by the Queen, won the 3.55 Unibet Extra Place Offers Every Day/British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes at Kempton today.

The Queen is likely to have been watching live televised coverage of the race in Surrey from Windsor Castle, the day after racing resumed behind closed doors.

Racing has now returned in England since lockdown restrictions have gradually begun to be eased by the Government.

However, races are taking place behind closed doors, and spectators are not allowed.

Strict hygiene and social distancing rules are also being enforced.

The Queen is an avid racing fan, and is known to hold a special place in her heart for horses.

Testament to the Queen’s passion for racing, a picture has recently been released of the Queen while living in lockdown at Windsor.

In the snap the Queen looks perfectly content riding her horse Fern, a 14-year-old Fell Pony, through the extensive royal grounds in Berkshire.

The picture was published on the Royal Family Instagram account, and was captioned: “Her Majesty has enjoyed riding since childhood and is closely involved with the welfare of the horses she owns for breeding, riding and racing.”

The Queen’s usually very busy royal schedule has been significantly reduced due to the virus.

While the Queen is currently unable to complete in-person royal engagements, she has remained a public figure for the nation during this time of crisis.

The Queen has made two televised addresses to the nation since the UK was put under lockdown.

She spoke to the nation about the coronavirus crisis, signing off her speech with the famous lyrics to Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again.

The Queen also addressed the nation to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day on May 8.

The Queen and Philip often spend much of the year apart at different royal residences, but the couple are said to be enjoying their time together during lockdown.

A source told Vanity Fair earlier this year the Queen was in “excellent spirits” at home in Windsor.

The source said: “One of the nicest things for the Queen is that she is getting to spend more time with her husband than she usually would.

“They have dinner together in the evenings and I imagine the Queen is of the generation where she dresses for dinner.”
