The Queen died peacefully with the now-King Charles and Anne, Princess Royal, at her bedside, as some family members sadly missed their chance to say goodbye, reports say.

Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward and his wife Sophie all raced to Balmoral when she was given hours to live but weren’t able to make it in time, sources have said.

The Duke of Cambridge looked sombre as he was pictured driving his uncles through the gates of the Scottish residence in a Range Rover at 5.06pm.

It’s believed the 96-year-old had already passed away at this point, despite Buckingham Palace announcing her death an hour-and-a-half later at 6.30pm.

The Duke of Sussex also attempted to see his grandmother one last time after cancelling a charity event with wife Meghan Markle in London.

He was pictured arriving nearly two hours after the news of her death following 70 years on the throne was shared with the world.

Her eldest child Charles already happened to be in Scotland when doctors sounded the alarm.

He made it to her bedside by 10.27am after the monarch’s burgundy-liveried helicopter was sent from Windsor at 6.48am to collect him from Dumfries House, Ayrshire, MailOnline reports.

His wife, the Duchess of Cornwall – who will now be known as Queen Consort, was already at Birkhall and was driven over by car to join the family.

Meanwhile, Anne was already by her mother’s side after doing royal engagements in the area.

The royal household was left in tears by the loss of Her Majesty.

One said: ‘However much you try to prepare yourself for this moment, it just hits you like a ton of bricks. 

‘She is irreplaceable. I just can’t believe we won’t see that impish smile again. There is a deep sense of shock.’

Thousands of mourners flocked to the gates of Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace in the rain last night.

As the Queen’s death was announced, many broke into an impromptu rendition of God Save The King.

King Charles said his mother’s death ‘is a moment of the greatest sadness’ in his first statement as monarch.

He automatically became King on the death of his mother, but this will be formally proclaimed at a historic Accession Council on Saturday.
