Queen devastated: Monarch ‘overcome’ on Remembrance Sunday amid ‘tough’ Royal Family year

Her Majesty joined the rest of the Royal Family for Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the end of last week in what was an emotional tribute to fallen soldiers in both the First and Second World Wars. The Queen stood on a balcony with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. On the 100th anniversary of Remembrance Sunday, both the Prime Minister and Jeremy Corbyn joined veterans at the cenotaph in London while services were held across the UK.

In a rare and unguarded moment, the normally stoic Queen displayed an emotional side as she shed a tear for those who gave their lives fighting for freedom.

Commenting on the heartbreaking moment, ITV’s Lorraine welcomed royal editor Russell Myers to her show on Monday morning.

Lorraine said: “We don’t usually see the Queen emotional. The last time we saw her shed a tear was when Britannia was scrapped.

“But clearly this was very, very special for her.”

Royal expert Mr Myers said: “It is her 67th Armistice Day doing it at the cenotaph. And I think she was overcome.

“When you look at the footage she was wiping a tear. It has obviously been a very tough year for her personally.

“Seeing the family going through what they have: a lot of rifts and rows.

“And she was standing up on the balcony as she has done for the last few years – Prince Charles actually lays her wreath.

“And when you are looking down at 800 troops doing the procession and the ‘Last Post’ being played, it is very emotive. And she was certainly overcome.”

Lorraine replied: “Yeah, I think most people were. Most of us cried watching that.

“And it really brings it home to you just what we owe.”

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex stood on a separate balcony to the Queen, and future Queen consorts, Catherine and Camilla.

But the move was not intended as any sort of “snub” to Meghan.

Lorraine explained: “The Queen was there on the balcony. She was with Camilla and with Kate.

“Not any snub! It’s just a tiny balcony and you can’t fit anymore on there.”

Mr Myers confirmed: “The Queen stands with the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge and there was a bit of interaction between them talking about how cold it was actually.

“And on the other one, there was Sophie Wessex, Meghan and Sir Tim Lawrence as well.”
