The Duke of York explained that the Queen is an “incredibly stoic” person but that her husband’s death has left a “huge void” in her life. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who was 99 when he died, had known each other since they were teenagers and were married for 73 years. Her Majesty described Philip as her “strength and stay” through all the incredible changes in the family, the nation and the world in the years they have been together.

The Queen, who turns 95 this month, will be feeling his loss greatly.

Prince Andrew spoke to the BBC as the family attended a service of remembrance and was asked how his mother was doing.

He said: “The Queen, as you expect, is an incredibly stoic person and she described his passing as ‘a miracle’ and she’s contemplating, I think is the way I would put it.

“She described it as having left a huge void in her life.

“But we, the family, those who are close, are rallying round to make sure we are there to support her and I know there is a huge amount of support, not just for her, but for everybody as we go through this enormous change.”

The Queen’s description of her husband’s death as a “miracle” may be due to the fact it was very peaceful.

The monarch, 95, was by the Duke’s side when he passed on at home in Windsor.

Their daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex, described it as “gentle” and as if “somebody took him by the hand and off he went”.

Andrew said in his interview, which took place outside the Royal Family’s private chapel, that he and the family were giving private prayers there.

He described his father’s death as “a terrible loss” and that he felt “very sorry and supportive” of the Queen, who is “feeling it probably more than everybody else”.

Sophie’s words echoed this sentiment, stating the Queen has been “amazing”.

Prince Edward’s wife said that the Queen was “thinking of others before herself”, with the Earl adding “as always”.

Their daughter Louise stood behind her parents, looking emotional.

All were dressed in black to mark their mourning of the man who Andrew described as the “grandfather of the nation”.

Prince Andrew thanked the public for their tributes and said he related the loss to everyone who had suffered loss during the pandemic.

He said: “My father said to me on the telephone a few months ago that we’re all in the same boat and we must always remember that, but occasionally we in the family are asked to stand up and show compassion and leadership.

“And unfortunately with my father’s death it has brought it home to me, not just our loss, but actually the loss that everybody else has felt for so many people who have, as it were, died and lost loved ones during the pandemic.

“And so we are all in the same boat, slightly different circumstances because he didn’t die from Covid, but we are all feeling a great sense of loss.

“But at the same time, the tributes have been absolutely amazing that I’ve seen and the messages that I’m getting are absolutely outstanding and I just want to say how grateful I am, we are, for these tributes.

“He was a remarkable man, I loved him as a father, he was so calm; if you had a problem, he would think about it, and that’s the great thing I always think about is that he was always somebody you could go to and he would always listen, so it’s a great loss.

“I think the other way I would put it is we have lost almost the grandfather of the nation and I feel very sorry and supportive of my mother who is feeling it probably more than everybody else.”

All three of the Queen’s sons have visited her at Windsor following Philip’s death, and Princess Anne put up a heartbreaking statement about her father.

It is believed Anne and Philip shared a particularly special bond, as they had very similar personalities and outlook on life.
