Queen delights commentators with razor-sharp wit – monarch ‘can do whatever she likes’

During the Royally Obsessed podcast, Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie discussed the way Queen Elizabeth II referred to COVID-19 while visiting the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down alongside Prince William. Ms Bowie said she has missed the Queen’s “quippy asides” during the pandemic.  

Ms Bowie said: “The Queen as she is a monarch and can do whatever she likes, called the coronavirus ‘this horrible new thing’.”

Ms Fiorito replied: “I like that, this horrible new thing.”

Ms Bowie continued: “We missed hearing these quippy asides from her. 

“It was the ultimate burn on the coronavirus, that she doesn’t deem it necessary to call it by its real name.”

Ms Fiorito added: “Maybe that is how we should do it.”

During her appearance at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, the Queen said regarding the coronavirus: “It’s doubling itself again.”

Professor Tim Atkins said: “We will have to evaluate how we approach this.”

The Queen responded: “With all these horrible new things.”

The royal experts also said they felt Queen Elizabeth II should have worn a mask during her first royal engagement outside Windsor Castle since March.

Ms Bowie said: “Everyone is really upset though because they did not wear masks.”

Ms Fiorito replied: “I was upset.”

Ms Bowie said: “I can’t believe it, it was a moment to showcase to the country.”

Ms Fiorito responded: “That is what bothers me about it, even if they did all the details in keeping her protected.

“Just wear a mask because you are leading by example.

“The Queen should demonstrate to the people that it is the standard right now.”

Ms Bowie added: “I also want to protect her at all costs.”

Before the Queen’s royal engagement, all those who attended are understood to have been tested for coronavirus to ensure the safety of the monarch.
