Queen cancels trip to Northern Ireland following advice from doctors

The Queen has been forced to cancel a trip to Northern Ireland at the last minute following advice from her doctors.

In a rare move, the monarch, 95, has postponed the visit which was due to take place today and tomorrow and will instead ‘rest for a few days.’

Buckingham Palace said she was ‘disappointed’ not to be able to go but promised the people of Northern Ireland she’d be visiting again soon.

The Queen was out and about last night as she hosted a reception being held as part of the major Global Investment summit at Windsor Castle.

She recently turned down the title of ‘Oldie of the Year’ because she feels she does not meet the criteria.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: ‘The Queen has reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days.

‘Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow.

‘The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland, and looks forward to visiting in the future.’

The Queen’s decision is understood not to be related to coronavirus.

She’ll be resting in Windsor Castle and is still expected to attend events linked to the Cop26 climate change conference in Glasgow at the end of the month.

After being kept in a bubble during the pandemic, the monarch has thrown herself back into public life over the past few months.

She was pictured at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and Ascot in recent months since, and still enjoys riding her own ponies.

Last week, she used a walking stick for what is believed to be the first time at a major public event when she attended a service marking the centenary of the Royal British Legion.

Elizabeth II is the is the nation’s longest reigning monarch and is due to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee – 70 years on the throne – next year.
