Due to backlash in the court of public opinion, when Prince Charles married Camilla Parker-Bowles in 2005, Clarence House said at the time that she would be styled as Princess Consort when Charles becomes monarch rather than Queen Consort. As recently as last year, Clarence House reiterated that it was still their intention, saying: “The intention is for the Duchess to be known as Princess Consort when the Prince accedes to the throne. This was announced at the time of the marriage, and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Despite Clarence House’s statement, Camilla will automatically become Queen Consort when Prince Charles takes the throne unless legislation is passed by parliament to the contrary.

Kinsey Schofield spoke to author Christopher Anderson on To Di For Daily podcast.

She said: “They said that, upon marrying her, [Camilla] they said to the public that she will not become Queen, she’s going to be Princess Consort.

“Now all of a sudden, and this is years ago that you wrote this, they’re saying we don’t know if she’s going to become Queen. Can they get away with that?”

Mr Anderson said: “Right? That was a lie. He always intended for her to Queen. And in fact, she is now Princess of Wales.

“This is kind of a shell game, they’re playing a kind of a smoke and mirrors because nobody wants to offend sensibilities by calling this person Princess of Wales, Diana will forever be Princess of Wales as far as people are concerned.

“But no, Camilla Queen, of course, she’s going to be Queen, she will automatically become queen when he’s king.

“And do you think he’s going to have a coronation and then say, oh, you’ll be the first Queen Consort in modern history to just be ignored? Of course not.

“Charles is going to grab it, and he’s always intended to.”

Although she is married to the Prince of Wales, Camilla did choose to use the title of Duchess of Cornwall instead of Princess of Wales upon her marriage.

Charles’ messy divorce with Princess Diana and her subsequent death paved a rocky road for the couple.

The years after Charles and Camilla’s marriage saw a PR campaign to improve the Duchess of Cornwall’s popularity with the British public.

As part of the move, Camilla took on the subsidiary title of Duchess of Cornwall upon her marriage rather than the more traditional Princess of Wales to match Prince Charles due to the emotive connection with Princess Diana.

If Camilla is styled as Princess Consort it may mean that we may never see a Queen Consort again, with all future wives of Kings being styled as Princess Consort.

This would impact all future Queen consorts, including the Duchess of Cambridge who at the moment is destined to become Queen when William becomes King.
