Prince Harry, 36, has travelled to the UK for the first time since Megxit and the controversial Oprah Winfrey interview – but left the Duchess of Sussex behind in the US. Pregnant Meghan, 39, has remained in California after being advised against flying by doctors.

A source told People magazine the Queen “understands” why Meghan is not able to attend the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral on Saturday.

The source said: “It was always a given that Harry would return to England for his grandfather’s passing.”

The insider added the Sussexes were “in contact” with the Queen after Philip’s death.

The source said: “Meghan expressed condolences. The Queen understands why she can’t travel at the moment.”

Harry, wearing a black face mask, landed at Heathrow on a British Airways flight from Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

He is staying at his and Meghan’s former home, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

It is the first time the Queen’s grandson has returned to Britain in more than a year.

Harry and former actress Meghan quit royal duties in March 2020 for a new life of personal and financial freedom in America.

The couple, who are expecting a daughter, have bought an £11 million mansion in Montecito where they are living with their young son Archie.

They have also signed lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify.

Harry’s visit comes just weeks after his and Meghan’s bombshell TV interview.

The Sussexes plunged the Royal Family into crisis with the tell-all interview, which aired last month.

Meghan and Harry made a set of shocking claims about the royals – who hit back saying “some recollections may vary”.

As Philip’s funeral is due to take place on Saturday, Harry will not have time to complete the full 10-day quarantine period.

The rules, however, do allow a person to temporarily leave their place of quarantine on compassionate grounds, which includes funerals.

Harry could also participate in the “Test to Release” scheme.

Under the scheme, if he pays around £130 for a private test from an approved supplier five days into quarantine, he may be free to leave if the result is negative.

Philip died peacefully aged 99 at Windsor Castle last Friday.

In a statement paying tribute to his grandfather, Harry summed him up as “master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right till the end”.
