GB News presenter Davie Donaldson reported from Balmoral, Scotland where he discussed the unearthed story of the Queen’s lawyers lobbying Scottish climate change laws to make her land exempt from the scheme. The Queen, one of the biggest landowners in Scotland, is the only exemption from the Heat Network bill which will install new pipes across the country which will be heated by renewable energy. The Queen’s consent is required before any work on her land can take place with Mr Donaldson raising an eyebrow at the decision which goes against other environmentally conscious Royal Family members.

Speaking on GB News, Mr Donaldson recapped the story where the Queen uses an old legislative privilege known as “Queen’s Consent” which allows her advanced sight of legislation before it is presented if it is in the interests of the monarch. 

The Queen has the right to carry out this parliamentary process but critics have called for a change in the rules with SNP and Liberal Democrat MSPs being the most vocal. 

The then Energy Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, proposed an amendment to the bill which would prevent private companies from compelling the Queen to sell her land so environmental infrastructure can be built. 

However, it was not pointed out the amendment was down to the Queen’s lobbying. 

Mr Donaldson added: “It’s a bit of a strange one, I don’t know why you would go to all that trouble to ensure that you don’t have to follow suit with everyone else.

“But then as I said before, when you’re the Queen perhaps you can do whatever you like to a certain extent.

“It does seem a bit strange when especially as I say with Prince Charles and Prince William are fighting for climate change and looking at global warming.

“It does seem a little bit odd that the Queen’s people have taken the stance of decided to go down a different route.”

Liberal Democrat MSP Willie Rennie said lobbying from the palace should have been declared when the bill was being debated.

He said: “This research shows that Queen’s consent isn’t just some arcane legacy from parliament’s past, it’s a live process.

“Laws are secretly being changed behind Scotland’s back as a result.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “The royal household can be consulted on bills in order to ensure the technical accuracy and consistency of the application of the bill to the crown, a complex legal principle governed by statute and common law.

“This process does not change the nature of any such bill.”

Prince Charles visited Scotland ahead of the news breaking and met with volunteers who were cleaning beaches in Caithness.

The Prince of Wales was told over 31 tonnes of rubbish have been cleaned up from the beaches since the Caithness Beach Clean Group first started.

Prince Charles also launched a £7.5billion scheme last month which will seek to raise money to make environmentally friendly investments.

In recent weeks, the Prince of Wales was concerned smaller farms could cease to exist as the country seeks to create cheap and plentiful supplies of food.

Prince William also launched the Earthshot Prize where cash grants will be awarded to groups or individuals with projects which could help the Earth over the next few years.
