Queen at Balmoral: What does the Queen REALLY do at Balmoral on her summer holiday?
Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Sandringham estate – the Queen has a wealth of stunning properties available at her disposal. But of them all, Queen Elizabeth II is said to be most at home at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire. The 93-year-old will no doubt enjoy her time away from the chaos of Westminster this summer, but how does she enjoy her holiday when she’s there?
Hosting
Perhaps the most favourite part of her summer holiday, the Queen always enjoys having family to stay at the Scottish Castle throughout the summer.
She was photographed with her son Prince Andrew and his children Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice attending church on there on Sunday.
Prince Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson also visited the lovely estate this weekend, which Eugenie previously described as “the most beautiful place”.
A royal expert has claimed Meghan Markle, Prince Harry and baby Archie are likely Balmoral guests this year and that the Queen can’t wait to host them.
Mr Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “It would seem likely that Harry and Meghan will take Archie to Balmoral this year to be with the Queen, especially as this will be a special time for them with Archie born so recently.”
“The Queen is obviously fond of her [Meghan] and if reports of their visit are correct, will be looking forward to it enormously.”
Dog walks
The Queen’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie previously dropped a massive hint about how her Majesty winds down at Balmoral, and much of it is outdoorsy.
Speaking on ITV’s Our Queen At Ninety,Princess Eugenie said: “Walks, picnics, dogs – a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs – and people coming in and out all the time.
“It’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa, for us to come and see them up there; where you just have room to breathe and run.”
The Queen is said to enjoy a refreshing country walk around the stunning estate.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana spent their honeymoon there and were snapped taking a stroll on the countryside around the castle.
Peace and quiet
Balmoral is a haven for royals away from the media spotlight and is one of the rare places they can enjoy real privacy.
Princess Eugenie said: “It’s the most beautiful place on earth. I think Granny is the most happy there. I think she really, really loves the Highlands.”
The Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen usually spend some time at Balmoral in a the secluded guesthouse Craigowan Lodge.
The seven-bedroom holiday home is about a mile from the castle and allows the Queen and Philip to have some time to themselves.
Picnics
Family picnics and barbecues on the lawn at Balmoral are a bit of a royal tradition.
The Queen is even said to do the washing up after them, while Philip in his younger years used to man the grill.
Highland games
The Queen usually attends the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering towards the end of her Balmoral trip.
The event is the biggest Highland Game gathering in the calendar and not one Her Majesty likes to miss.
Last year she attended with her children Prince Andrew and Princess Anne.
