The 95-year-old monarch, understood to be feeling stiff rather than suffering from an injury, put a brave face on the Royal Family’s woes. She was meeting with the incoming Defence Services Secretary Major General Eldon Millar, who will be the official liaison between her and the Armed Forces, and his predecessor Rear Admiral James Macleod.

Wearing a geometric patterned dress, she chuckled as they arrived from an adjoining room, saying: “Oh, I’m here. I thought you might have just stayed in there for ages. Good morning.”

It was her first face-to-face audience since a Covid scare last week when she met Prince Charles within the 48-hour danger period, before he tested positive.

In the Oak Room at Windsor, she beamed even though the occasion came as she dealt with Prince Andrew’s disgrace and the prospect of a Metropolitan Police investigation into a cash-for-honours scandal at Charles’s charitable organisation, The Prince’s Foundation.

The engagement yesterday suggested the Queen had escaped Covid but Buckingham Palace had refused to say if she had tested positive or negative. One source did state that she was not displaying symptoms.

There will be much for Maj Gen Millar to discuss with the Queen, not least the task of appointments to replace Andrew in honorary positions with military units, including his previous role of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

The Queen also has to appoint new members to posts relinquished by Prince Harry.
