Qatar reveals World Cup security uniforms in bizarre football kit-like launch
Qatar released the new uniforms for security staff at the World Cup in a bizarre ‘kit launch’.
The government has given football fans a first look at the trendy threads the security will be wearing as they try to crack down on supporters at the World Cup next month.
In a bizarre launch the Qatari authorities unveiled the uniforms like something out of a football kit promo event.
Lines of mannequins were inspected by the Qatari Prime Minister, as he gave the gold seal of approval in the special event at the Ministry of Interior building in Doha.
Security guards have their own custom badge, along with three different outfits, which fans have likened to home, away and third kits.
The ‘home’ variant or ‘General Security’ uniform goes all black with a thin chequered stripe running through the centre, perhaps a nod to Qatar winning the rights to host the World Cup back in 2010.
It has red and blue accents on the shoulders – the red to reflect ‘high alert’ and blue for ‘tranquillity’ – with men expected to wear a military-style beret, and women will wear a head covering.
The ‘away’ kit or ‘Riot Police’ uniforms are padded up, with numerous layers to ensure maximum physical protection from pyrotechnics, stones and other violent items.
They also get a neat accessory in the form of a black shield, fit for days where fan bashing becomes a necessity.
And finally, the ‘third kit’ or ‘explosives detection’ a thick beige jacket that could possibly be a reference to Qatar’s most abundant commodity, sand.
It also comes with a long mirror used to look around corners without getting too close to explosives.
‘We believe that sport should bring people together. And when it doesn’t, we want to make a statement.’
Other nations including England, Agentina, and the USA have also all recently launched their own new strips for the tournament.
The kits were overlooked by the Prime Minister of Qatar Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani in the inauguration ceremony last week.
Each unit were given a different colour shirt in a presentation to the PM, along with the launch of the cars, vehicles and motorcyles set to be used at the World Cup.
President of the SSOC’s Training and Rehabilitation Unit, Lt Col Fahad Al Subaie told Qatar News Agency that a committee was formed to produce an ‘exceptional and unprecedented’ uniform for security forces.
The committee did its best to prepare ‘creative uniform, vehicles and motorcycles’ that ‘attract the fans and simultaneously preserve the security identity and character’, he told QNA.
He said fabrics used for making the uniform were tested to be ‘comfortable’ for security staff and ‘appropriate to climate’ during the tournament.
Al Subaie also voiced hopes the approved uniform would be patented worldwide as closely related to the police forces in the State of Qatar.
Al Subaie added that this uniform could be used and adopted in all activities and championships after the World Cup, stressing that there would be intensified campaigns to promote for the uniform among the fans.
