And every pupil will see a year-on-year funding increase of at least two per cent. Around £1.5billion will be spent over the next six years to rebuild further education colleges. The Chancellor also confirmed the core health budget will grow by £6.6billion, funding 50,000 more nurses and 50 million more general practice appointments.

Capital spending in the NHS will rise by £2.3billion, fund 40 new hospitals and upgrade 70 more.

Despite the dire national finances, the government departmental spending will soar to £540billion in 2021-22 – a £14.8billion rise in cash terms.

Over this year and next, day-today departmental spending will rise, in real terms, by 3.8 per cent – the fastest rate in 15 years.

There will be £27billion spent on economic infrastructure.

Also, £2.1billion has been allocated to covering private train company losses during the crisis.

Pascale Robinson, of antiprivatisation group We Own It, said: “This is another shockingly ill-judged decision.”
