Prize-winning bull knocks handler unconscious after becoming 'spooked' at show

An animal-handler at an agricultural show has suffered head injuries after a prize-winning bull became spooked and trampled him underfoot.

The Limousin bull had just won an award at The Great Yorkshire Show and the man was walking it out of the cattle ring when it was startled.

It then dragged the handler back across the ring, knocking him briefly in the process.

The man was treated by ambulance staff before being transferred to Harrogate District Hospital with what are thought to be non-serious head injuries.

Bystanders said they had dashed to get out the way of the animal but added that the incident was quickly brought under control.

The bull had been judged at around 9.45am on July 9.

One spectator said: ‘It was scary, this is a big animal we are talking about. There were a few screams because, at one point, we did fear it could charge. I wouldn’t like to be in its path.’

The Great Yorkshire Show is an agricultural show which takes place on the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, annually from the second Tuesday of July until the following Thursday.

Now in its 161st year, the show is run by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and is the largest agricultural show in England.

It attracts more than 130,000 visitors and 8,500 animals, showcasing the best of British farming, food and countryside.
