It was taken to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Margrethe II’s accession to the throne in the green salon of Christian VII’s Palace.  The 81-year-old Monarch was surrounded by three generations of her own family in the portrait taken before a private dinner with the Crown Prince couple.

It was a surprise dinner secretly arranged by the Queen’s family without her prior knowledge on Friday, January 14.

Although the Queen’s daughter-in-law Mary and Marie stood out in their beautiful dresses and attire there were many other notable family members present.

Queen Margrethe’s sons Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim attended.

Also in attendance were the Queen’s eight grandchildren.

They include Prince Christian, 16, Princess Isabella, 14, Prince Vincent, 11, Princess Josephine, 11, Prince Nikolai, 22, Prince Felix, 19, Prince Henrik, 12, and Princess Athena, nine.

Unfortunately, Margrethe’s sister Queen Ann-Marie of Greece was unable to attend because her husband King Constantine had COVID-19.

The table for dinner was set with Flora Danica service which, according to the Royal House, is the most precious Danish dinner service.

However, Friday’s diner was the first time it had been used in over 30 years.

It was last used in the Royal House of Denmark for Queen Ingrid’s birthday in 1990.

Queen Margrethe ascended the throne on January 14, 1972.

The Royal Household has announced that a number of key events which were planned to mark the anniversary in January 2022 will instead be held on September 10 and September 11.

These include a celebration at Copenhagen City Hall , a performance at the Royal Danish Theatre , Church service at Copenhagen Cathedral and a banquet at Christiansborg Palace.
