Princess Kate’s gruelling morning hobby is not for the fainthearted

Princess Kate celebrates six months of the ‘Shaping Us’ campaign

Princess Kate is known to start the day with a green smoothie – and she’s added something new to her morning routine.

Appearing on The Good, The Bad & the Rugby earlier this year, Kate revealed she enjoys cold swimming, saying: “The colder, the better. I absolutely love it.”

But her husband, Prince William, isn’t quite on board, with Kate sharing: “Slightly to the point where William’s like, ‘Catherine, you’re crazy.’ And it’s dark, and it’s raining.”

During the podcast, Kate talked about the importance of being active and gives credit to her parents, who have encouraged her to do so since she was a small child.

This isn’t the first time this has come up, Kate mentioned her swimming hobby last year when she was in Wales meeting with fans.

Last year, Kate was meeting fans in Wales, including Alison Cheeke who wore a robe to stay warm in the rain, with Kate telling her she also wears a robe, post-swim.

Cheeke shared the exchange with People, saying: “She said she wears one of them when she goes cold water swimming.”

TIME magazine did a deep dive into this extreme hobby, writing: “Research has shown that swimming–the kind done in normal-temperature water, at least–is one of the best full-body workouts.”

In addition to swimming, Kate exercises with her three children in the morning, jumping on the trampoline together before school.

Kate’s routine and results got the attention of Hello! writer Georgia Brown, who followed it for two weeks.

Here is her takeaway: “Once I had nailed the routine of wake up, exercise, work, sleep, repeat, I started to notice a major shift in my focus, motivation and mental health.

“I started to crave the post-workout endorphins and knowing I had smashed my fitness goals for the day before I’d even started work was a far more rewarding feeling than my usual slog to wake up and drag myself to my desk to begin work (ahem).”
