Princess Kate appears ‘slightly bland’ but is shrewdly ‘playing the long game’

Express tests Kate Middleton’s oatmeal diet

Princess Kate has her “eye on the long game” and has a “tougher” nature than many give her credit for, according to a royal author.

Out of all the members of the Royal Family Kate is often lauded as being most popular for her kind demeanour, elegance and poise, although Valentine Low noted that to some she may seem “slightly bland”.

However she exclaimed that the Princess is anything but as she comes to the end of her first year in her role as Queen Consort-in-waiting after the death of Queen Elizabeth last September.

Mr Low said that she is planning ahead to secure the future of the monarchy long-term and is not afraid to stand up for her family, particularly in the wake of their ongoing estrangement from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Courtiers author told Page Six: “Interestingly, behind the scenes, she’s a lot more steely, a lot tougher than we give her credit.

“She’s this nice-looking woman, dresses nicely, smiles nicely, adopts sort of fairly uncontroversial charities. You know, they think she’s slightly bland.”

Mr Low revealed that Kate played a significant role in the drafting of the statement released in the wake of Harry and Meghan’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.

In the chat the Sussexes claimed there had been “concerns” raised by one of the royals about what colour their then-unborn son’s skin would be while Meghan was pregnant with Prince Archie.

Days after the interview was broadcast Buckingham Palace responded saying that while they took the allegations seriously, “recollections may vary” when it came to Harry and Meghan’s account of royal life.

Mr Low explained that it was someone from Prince William’s team who came up with the phrase, but Kate insisted it be kept in the statement despite some protestations.

He wrote in his book: “There were some people in other [royal] households, who felt it would antagonize Harry and Meghan and would go down badly and just keep the whole unpleasantness going. But it was Kate who really strongly made the argument.”

He explained that Kate: “thinks very carefully about the long-term security and strength and stability of the Royal Family as an institution. She’s good. She has a good eye on the big picture, the long game.”

As Kate focuses on protecting the Royal Family’s image, Meghan and Harry have been struggling to maintain their success following a prolific winter which saw the release of their Netflix docuseries and Harry’s memoir Spare.

The couple lost their multi-million dollar deal with Spotify last month and are said to be considering their next steps in Hollywood, which may see them relocate to another part of California.
