Princess Kate ‘adamant’ the royals take a firm stance against Harry and Meghan

Kate Middleton to reunite Prince William and Harry says expert

Princess Kate was reportedly “adamant” that the Royal Family hit back at allegations made against them by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in their now notorious interview with Oprah Winfrey back in March 2021.

In their statement released in the wake of the interview, the royals said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

The phrase ‘recollections may vary’ was originally coined by Prince William’s private secretary Jean-Christophe Gray, although it has been attributed to others including the late Queen’s then-press secretary Donal McCabe or Charles’ private secretary Clive Alderton.

While Kate may not have come up with the phrase herself, according to royal author Valentine Low she pushed hardest for it to be included in the statement.

Speaking on the podcast Scandal Mongers to promote his new book ‘Courtiers’, Mr Low explained how Kate had been cast as the “peacemaker” in the rift between Harry and William.

He said: “She was often the peacemaker, or tried to be the peacemaker, with Harry. You saw that after Philip’s funeral, when she kind of brought the brothers together.”

After the funeral of the late Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021 it was the Princess who made an effort to speak with Harry, before allowing him to talk privately with his brother.

However she stood firm and showed her “steelier” side when it came to crafting a response to the Oprah interview, as Mr Low explained: “The person who was adamant that it should stay in was Kate.

“She made the argument that ‘we’ve got to lay down a marker to say that we challenge some of this narrative because otherwise it’s going to be accepted as true and we’ve got the future reputation of the Royal Family to think about.’

“It shows a side of Kate that’s not always appreciated – that she’s far steelier… she’s thinking about the longer term.”

Although Harry’s marriage to Meghan has been blamed as the cause of the breakdown of the relationship between him and William, he has always argued this was not the case.

The brothers had been very close, however, a resurfaced video clip from 2016 suggests there was already some friction between them.

In a seemingly jokey exchange, Harry claims his brother’s excitement at having a little brother quickly wore off as they watched a clip of Harry’s christening from 1984.
