Princess Eugenie: Expert on possible royal baby names

In early 2021 Princess Eugenie is expected to welcome a new royal baby with her husband of two years, Jack Brooksbank. The couple shared an adorable picture of baby slippers on Instagram last year, declaring how “excited” they are to welcome their new addition. When Eugenie and Jack’s bundle of joy arrives, the child will be 11th in line for the throne.

Will Eugenie’s baby get a royal title?

Although Princess Eugenie’s baby will be a member of the Royal Family, the child is not expected to be given a royal title by the Queen for several reasons.

The Queen often gives new royal titles to senior royals when they tie the knot, as was the case for the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex in recent years.

However Princess Eugenie is not a working member of the Royal Family, and therefore she was not given a new royal title when she married Jack Brooksbank in 2018.

When members of the Royal Family have had a baby boy, traditionally the baby would take on one of their father’s subsidiary titles.

However as Jack Brooksbank doesn’t have a royal title, the baby will most probably be known as Master or Miss Brooksbank.

Although Eugenie and Jack do not have new royal titles since they married, Eugenie has retained her title as a Princess.

But even though Princess Eugenie has a royal title of her own, she is not able to pass this on to her child.

Will Eugenie’s baby receive her royal title?

Princess Eugenie is the second daughter of the Queen’s son Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York.

So as the granddaughter of the monarch through the male line, Eugenie and her older sister Princess Beatrice were entitled to Princess titles upon their birth.

Both Eugenie and Beatrice are now married, so their official styles have changed.

But prior to their wedding days, the sisters were known as Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York, to reflect their father’s title.

Eugenie’s baby is not entitled to the York dukedom, due to royal convention.

Princess Eugenie and her older sister Princess Beatrice are not eligible to inherit their father’s dukedom.

Royal titles are passed through the male line, and as Prince Andrew has two daughters and no sons, the title will be left vacant when he dies.

Therefore the title will not pass to Eugenie’s child, nor any future children Beatrice and Eugenie may have.

Could the Queen give Eugenie’s baby a royal title anyway?

In theory, the Queen could decide to give Eugenie and Jack’s baby a royal title, as only the monarch has the power to create royal titles.

But even if the Queen offers Eugenie a title for her child, it is thought she would not accept the offer.

Eugenie is a non-working member of the Royal Family, and she has pursued her own career away from the royal spotlight over the years.

A royal insider told Vanity Fair: “Eugenie knows that a title can be a curse as well as a blessing and she and Jack want their child to live an ordinary life and eventually work to earn a living.”
