Princess Eugenie’s baby will be the newest addition to the Royal Family. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry welcomed baby Archie Harrison in 2019, and the year prior Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William added a third child to their busy family, Prince Louis.
Royal fans are always delighted when an impending royal arrival is announced, and of course many are wondering what Eugenie and Jack will decide to name their bundle of joy.
Eugenie and her elder sister Princess Beatrice both have quite unusual names for members of the Royal Family, with both their names throwbacks to royals of the Victorian era.
So when Eugenie and Jack welcome their firstborn in early 2021, they may decide on an equally unusual name for their baby.
However there is a strong precedent for certain names in the Royal Family, so Eugenie may decide to follow tradition with her name choice.
When Prince Louis was born in 2018, his name was quite unusual for a member of the Royal Family.
Prince Louis’ name has long been associated with French monarchs of history.
But for the British Royal Family, the name Louis is significant as it was the name of Prince Philip’s uncle and confidante, Lord Louis Mountbatten.
Prince Louis is the only recent royal to bear the name as his first name.
But while most royals don’t have the first name of Louis, a good proportion of them have the name Louis included in their middle names.
Many female royals also have the middle name or first name of Louise, as is the case for Prince Edward’s eldest, Lady Louise Windsor.
So Eugenie may decide on the name Louise or Louis for her firstborn, meaning the baby shares a special link with the youngest Cambridge child.
Aside from the royal connection, Eugenie may also decide on the name because of its popularity at the moment.

The name Louis and the name’s alternative spelling of Louie has been very popular with babies born in 2020.
Louis was the 53rd most popular boys name in 2020, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), while Louie was 42nd.
But if Eugenie opts against incorporating Louis into her baby’s name, there is plenty of name inspiration she could get from other members of her family.
The name Arthur is also a very popular royal middle name, and it is shared by Prince Charles and Prince William.
She may also use the name of one of her relatives such as her father, Prince Andrew, or her grandfather Prince Philip.
Born as Princess Elizabeth, the current Queen Elizabeth II has also inspired a number of royal middle names.
At least eight of her closest family members have the middle name of Elizabeth, including Princess Anne, Princess Charlotte and Princess Beatrice.
While it’s possible Eugenie will name her daughter Elizabeth if she has a baby girl, she may also decide to honour her grandmother by including the name as a middle name.
