Princess Eugenie title: Heartbreaking reason Princess Eugenie will NEVER become a duchess

Princess Eugenie married her husband, Jack Brooksbank, on October 12, 2018, at St George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The couple met while on a skiing trip, and had been seeing each other for several years before tying the knot. A Buckingham Palace spokesman at the time said the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were “very pleased and wish the couple all the best”. So, why will Princess Eugenie never become a duchess?

While most princes are handed a dukedom, the situation is slightly different for female royals.

Prince Charles became Duke of Cornwall when he was just four years old when his mother became Queen. However, not everyone has chosen to inherit a dukedom.

Prince Edward, for example, became an Earl when he got married, preferring to wait to inherit the Edinburgh dukedom when his father dies.

The answer to why Princess Eugenie will not become a duchess lies within royal tradition.

Dukedoms are given by the reigning monarch, which is how Prince Philip came to be the Duke of Edinburgh.

He was granted the dukedom by his father-in-law, King George VI, on the eve of his wedding to the then Princess Elizabeth.

So when Eugenie, born Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena of York, got married, there was no precent for her to be named duchess given that traditionally, only sons and grandsons of the monarch got them.

As a female, she is also illegible to inherit her father’s Dukedom of York.

This is true despite the fact that a non-royal female who marries a prince will take on the duchess title if her husband is granted a dukedom.

The Queen could choose to make an exception in the case of Princess Eugenie and her sister, Princess Beatrice, but given that they are not full-time working royals, the monarch likely decided against it.

However, Princess Eugenie once described being called Princess as “one of the things that bugs me the most in this world”, so she probably does not mind her title.

Unlike Meghan Markle and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Beatrice also will not inherit the ‘Duchess’ title upon marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The Princess, 31, will, however, inherit a title outside of the British royal family, according to her future father-in-law.

Edoardo’s father Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi is an Italian count, and confirmed to the MailOnline that the Princess will be granted a countess title upon marriage.

“Edward is the only male descendant taking the family into the next generation. He is a count – his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna”, Mr Mozzi said.

However, she may decide to opt out of using the title in an official capacity in future, according to royal expert Joe Little.

Ms Little told Insider: “Princess Beatrice’s future husband doesn’t use his title, so it seems likely that she will do likewise once they are married. When she appress in the Court Circular I’d say it will be as ‘Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.”

Princess Beatrice will be marrying into one of Italy’s oldest families, as records show Mozzi’s descendants date back to 985 AD.

Mr Mozzi said: “We as a family celebrated 1,000 years in 1985 with unbroken documented archives. We are one of the only families in Italy to have all the records from that period to today.””

Edoardo’s parents spoke out about the relationship when the couple announced their engagement in 2019.

Count Mapelli Mozzi and Nikki Williams-Ellis said in a joint statement issued by the Palace: “We are truly delighted about Edoardo and Beatrice’s engagement.

“Our family has known Beatrice most of her life. Edo and Beatrice are made for each other, and their happiness and love for each other is there for all to see.”
