Princess Eugenie’s special bond with her first cousin Prince Harry could be pivotal in reuniting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with the rest of the Royal Family, according to royal author Phil Dampier. The expert believes it likely the cousins discussed the reported royal rift, with Eugenie possibly “smoothing things over”.

He told the Telegraph: “They’ve always got on very well and been very close.

“If there is going to be an emissary, or an intermediary, between Harry and the Royal Family back home, she could well fit the bill.

“I’m sure when they met in LA, they would have talked about the situation – and I’m sure she’ll be trying to smooth things over.

“She could be one of the ways whereby tentative steps could be taken to try and heal the rift.”

Prince Harry and Meghan officially stepped down as senior royals at the end of March 2020, a decision that led to the loss of their royal and military patronages.

In 2021, the Duke and Duchess opened up about their struggles as members of the Royal Family, also raising serious allegations of neglect and racism.

The Duke highlighted a difficult relationship with his father Prince Charles and distance with his brother Prince William – while conceding he loves both of them.

Last year, Harry saw some of his family members twice as he travelled back to the UK to attend the funeral of Prince Philip in April and the unveiling of the statue of Princess Diana he co-commissioned in July.

While in Windsor, the Duke was tipped to have stayed at Frogmore Cottage, the Sussexes’ former residence which they are believed to have handed over to Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank ahead of the birth of their son August.

Princess Eugenie has played an important role in Harry’s life.

The cousins often spent their winter holidays together and went on family skiing trips.

In their 20s, they shared the London set and were sometimes spotted at the same parties.

Moreover, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson introduced the Duke of Sussex to one of his previous serious girlfriend, Cressida Bonas.

Eugenie has been tipped to also be a confidante of Prince Harry by sources reported in the unauthorised biography of the Sussexes, Finding Freedom.

Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote: “Like Harry, Eugenie is loyal, honest and great fun.

“Not only did he trust her implicitly, but friends said that she gives great advice and has always been ‘beyond wise’ for her years.”

Eugenie also has a connection with Harry’s wife Meghan Markle, who revealed during her groundbreaking interview with Oprah Winfrey she had met the princess before being introduced to the Duke.

The interest in Eugenie and Harry’s bond was renewed on Sunday, as the cousins were spotted together at a Los Angeles stadium watching the Super Bowl.

Eugenie is the first royal known to have travelled across the pond to visit the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

During her trip, she will have likely met Archie, the couple’s firstborn, and their daughter Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana, born last June.

It isn’t known whether Eugenie’s husband Jack and their son also travelled to California.

On Valentine’s Day, the princess shared an adorable picture on Instagram to mark the special occasion – but it isn’t known whether she shared it in the UK or in the States.

In the snap, the couple is in a cherry blossom garden, with branches partially hiding their faces.

The royal simply captioned the picture writing: “Happy Valentine’s Day”.
