The Queen spent a night in hospital for “preliminary investigations”, after cancelling a trip to Northern Ireland following medical advice to rest for a few days instead.

She returned home on Thursday, with the Palace saying she was in “good spirits”.

The Princess was seen this week carrying on as usual, despite growing concerns over the Queen’s health.

She was joined by her husband, Jack Brooksbank, and a group of friends at the Walmer Castle, a West London pub which is co-owned by David Beckham and Guy Ritchie.

This comes after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also spotted continuing as normal, as they arrived at Heathrow’s Windsor Suite for a half-term holiday with Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three.

The Queen’s trip to hospital was the monarch’s first overnight stay in eight years.

But the decision to admit the monarch is believed to have been a precautionary one.

The palace released a statement saying: “Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today (Thursday) and remains in good spirits.”

However, they have been accused of misleading the public, with BBC Royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell saying the public “weren’t given the complete picture”.

“The problem, it seems to me, is that rumour and misinformation always thrive in the absence of proper, accurate and trustworthy information”, he added.

The Palace was also warned by veteran journalist Richard Kay against the “dangerous strategy” of hiding the Queen’s health updates, as it will erode public trust.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, he said: “By claiming the Queen was resting at Windsor … when in fact she was in hospital, suggests that the thinking of royal officials was not just muddled but dishonest”.

According to Kay, the “misleading” tactic is similar to one employed when Meghan Markle went into labour with her son Archie.

“A statement that the Duchess of Sussex had gone into labour was circulated eight hours after she had actually given birth.

“I would contend that the issue here is a matter of trust. And anything less than truthful eats away at that trust”, he added.

The 95-year-old monarch was also seen last Tuesday using a walking stick as she attended a service at Westminster Abbey, to mark the centenary of the Royal British Legion.

She took a shorter route into the Abbey, arriving through the Poet’s Yard entrance rather than the Great West Door.

This is the first time the monarch has been seen using a cane in twenty years.

But in spite of the Queen’s seemingly ill health, she is still set to attend the COP26 Climate Summitt in Glasgow next month.

However, a Palace source told the Mirror the results of the initial tests “could result in the need for further examinations….or confirm that no further tests are necessary”, which could bring her attendance at the Summitt into question.

The source added: “Clearly the doctors are looking at something during their preliminary investigations.”

Roughly 120 heads of state, including US President Joe Biden, are expected to attend the November summit.
