Princess Eugenie, 30, is Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s youngest daughter and is 10th in line to the throne. As non-working royals, the York sisters are cut more slack when it comes to royal protocol but are still expected to dress and behave in a certain way at official events.

Royal women are traditionally expected to abide by strict etiquette in terms of what make-up they wear and how they dress.

Royal wives, in particular, are expected to stick to subtle make-up, wear nude stockings and have neat hairstyles.

Dark lipstick and nail varnish are usually a no-no but Eugenie seemed to have fun flaunting this custom during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Eugenie is known to be creative and enjoys both photography and painting.

In 2012, she turned the brush on herself, painting each of her fingernails with a colourful Union flag.

Royal watchers were quick to spot the protocol breach as Eugenie and her sister Beatrice joined the Royal Family at the races.

During the Epsom Derby, photographers zoomed in to snap the princesses bold nail art.

While the make-up may have bent the rules around royal dressing, Eugenie was widely praised for the move by fans.

The reception Eugenie’s nails received in comparison to some of the criticism Meghan Markle faced for fashion choices in subsequent years is touched upon in a new book.

Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand charts Meghan Markle’s arrival into the Royal Family and her and Harry’s step down as senior royals.

The book claims Meghan was often criticised for seeming to snub protocol when other royal women weren’t.

The authors write: “No sign was too small to be considered an act of defiance – even her black nail polish and the one-shoulder gown she wore to the British Fashion Awards in December, where she presented Clare Waight Keller with the prize of British Designer of the Year.”

The book continued: “A photo booth snap of Meghan, Clare, and the actress Rosamund Pike posted to the British Fashion Council’s Instagram account was taken down within two hours.

“A Palace source said, ‘It was a private momento that was never meant to be shared.’

“A British Fashion Council source, however, said the organisation took down the photo because of the deluge of racist comments posted underneath.”

The authors mention a source who claimed Meghan’s black nail varnish may have fuelled some of the negative feedback.

They write: “The columnist Richard Kay (once Princess Diana’s favourite reporter) quoted a source, who sniped: ‘There was something ostentatious in the way she posed holding her bump, plus she was wearing dark nail varnish that the Queen hates.’

“Princess Diana had worn red nail polish and off-the-shoulder gowns.

“Princess Eugenie painted her nails in a Union Jack flag manicure to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012 and wore a similar plum shade to Meghan’s at a Serpentine Galleries Party.

“Even Kate, who normally toes the line had a pedicure in red at one event.”
