Princess Diana’s brutal assessment of government present exposed: ‘I can’t stand it!’

Members of the British Royal Family are often gifted different things by governments all over the world. However, Diana confided in her personal trainer she “couldn’t stand” a beautiful Hong Kong rug during a workout session. Jenni Rivett, who used to train with the Princess of Wales in Kensington Palace, recalled the moment Diana confessed her feelings about the gift.

She told the Daily Mail: “We trained in her drawing room at Kensington Palace which was absolutely huge.

“Once were were working out on this lovely rug and I said to her, ‘Don’t you think we should roll it up out of the way as it’s so beautiful?’”

Diana apparently responded: “Oh no, it’s a present from the Hong Kong government and I can’t stand it!”

Mr Rivett knew Diana very well, having worked with her for a number of years.

She told several other anecdotes about her time with the Princess of Wales, highlighting how down to earth she was, and how she loved to tell jokes and laugh.

For example, Ms Rivett recalled how mortified she was when she realised she was supposed to curtsy to Diana when she greeted her – but that Diana did not mind one bit.

She explained how they bumped into Diana’s friend Julia Samuel in Kensington Gardens one day and that Julia curtseyed.

When Ms Rivett asked why she was curtsying to her best friend, she apparently said: “I’m not curtsying to her, I’m curtsying to the crown and so should you.”

So the next time she saw Diana she apologised and said: “I believe I’m supposed to curtsy to you – so I owe you four years of curtsies.”

Diana reportedly replied: “That’s why I love you Jenni, because you’re South African and you don’t know about these things. Don’t worry.”

Ms Rivett said: “She really took people at face value – she used to take off my accent and talk like a South African, and say things like, ‘Yeeeees Jeeeni’. She was very funny.”

When they weren’t training in Kensington Palace, Ms Rivett sometimes took Diana to the Harbour Club gym, where they had a strict routine.

However, she recalled how one day Diana wanted to move to the stretching mat, which was quite unusual.

When Ms Rivett walked over, she saw actor Hugh Grant and Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon stretching with the princess.

She said: “She just wanted to be on the mat with them and show them how flexible she was.

“They were all laughing, she was showing her various exercises and encouraging them to copy her.”

She added: “I absolutely loved Diana’s sense of humour. She was always playing practical jokes.”

Diana’s other personal trainer, Carolan Brown, concurred with this observation.

She claimed that Diana particularly enjoyed playing pranks on Princess Michael of Kent.

For example, she once waited for Princess Michael to come out and get in her car and then she ran down in her skimpy gym wear to wave her off.

Princess Michael, who is married to the Queen’s cousin Prince Michael of Kent, caused some controversy back in 2017 when she decided to wear a brooch that was deemed as racist to a lunch that Meghan Markle was attending.

According to Ms Brown, Diana picked on Princess Michael because she “hated and kind of stuffiness” and that she thought Princess Michael “liked to be very regal”.
