Princess Diana to receive HEARTWARMING new tribute – ‘A testament of our love’
City officials are planning to rename a Paris square to honour the late Princess. The square in question is situated above the underpass where Diana died in 1997. It has become an unofficial memorial to the late Princess since her death, with well-wishers leaving flowers.
Currently named Maria Callas Square the renaming has been provisionally agreed.
A final decision will be taken at a city council meeting between June 11 and 14.
Speaking to The Mirror a Paris council source said: “It’s a testament to how much Paris loved Lady Di.
“The Maria Callas square never really got going, because the square became associated with Diana so quickly.
“There are other monuments to Maria Callas in Paris, but this will be the first official one to the Princess.”
Princess Diana was killed in a car accident on August 31 1997, at the age of 36.
Her boyfriend, Dodi al-Fayed, and their driver Henri Paul also died in the crash.
The current Maria Callas Square contains a statue, called the ‘flame of liberty’, designed to represent the friendship between France and the US.
However it has since turned into an unofficial memorial to Diana, with well-wishers leaving flowers and pictures of the princess in tribute.
There had been plans to construct a £1million garden to commemorate Diana in Paris’s Marais district, but this has since been scrapped.
Speaking to The Mirror Ingrid Seward, editor in chief of Majesty magazine, commented: “There are very few memorials to the late Diana Princess of Wales.
“Even her sons have not been quite able to agree on exactly how her statue in Kensington Gardens is to be portrayed and the project has been delayed once again.”
