Princess Diana’s first son Prince William is immediately in line to the British throne after his father Prince Charles. While William was always raised as Britain’s future king his younger brother Prince Harry was deemed less important within royal circles. Diana always treated her sons equals despite royal hierarchy and a particular nickname she had for Prince Harry revealed her disregard for the traditional line of succession.

Diana, Princess of Wales was not afraid to challenge the status quo.

The Princess rocked the very foundations of what it meant to be royal and is even said to have once questioned the British monarchy’s relevance over Christmas dinner with the Queen.

In 1995 she gave an explosive TV interview to the BBC’s Panorama programme in which she openly questioned Prince Charles suitability to be king.

When asked if she believed Charles would ever be king, Princess Diana said: “There was always conflict on that subject with him when we discussed it, and I understood that conflict, because it’s a very demanding role, being Prince of Wales, but it’s an equally more demanding role being king.

“And being Prince of Wales produces more freedom now, and being king would be a little bit more suffocating.

“And because I know the character I would think that the top job, as I call it, would bring enormous limitations to him, and I don’t know whether he could adapt to that.”

In contrast, Diana’s secret nickname for Prince Harry appears to show who she thought would be more suited to be king one day.

in the Channel 5 programme William & Harry: Princes At War? Royal correspondent, Robert Jobson, has shed some light on what Diana thought of the line of succession.

Mr Jobson claims Diana felt Harry would make a better king than his big brother and even had a special nickname for him because of it.

Mr Jobson said: “She used to refer to Harry as GKH (Good King Harry) because she thought he’d probably be better equipped for the role in the future than William.”

However before her death in 1997, Diana never publicly confirmed what she thought was right for William’s future.

When she was asked if the title of king should go directly to William during the Panorama interview, Diana said: “Well, then you have to see that William’s very young at the moment, so do you want a burden like that to be put on his shoulders at such an age? So I can’t answer that question.”

Her untimely and tragic death in 1997 saw her elevated to saintly levels by the British public and she was dubbed ‘The People’s Princess’ by the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

William was just 15 when Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Prince William and Prince Harry had always been close as children but were further bonded by their grief following the death of their mother.

However, the princes seem to have grown apart in recent years and a reported rift between the two brothers is the topic of a new Channel 5 documentary.
