Princess Diana is said to have become so paranoid and believed her Metropolitan Police security team were leaking stories about her, she decided to sack them. But royal commentators Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie believe Diana’s relationship with the press is comparable to what Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan Markle, 39, have with the media. They explained the eerie comparisons in their podcast.

Speaking on the Royally Obsessed podcast, Ms Bowie said: “What Harry has said about Meghan’s treatment in the press and how all they’re doing is good deeds a lot of the time.

“It’s weird how mercilessly the media has treated her in particular.”

Ms Fiorito added: “It’s really eerie with Harry set to turn 36 next week how parallel their lives have been.

“Obviously with a different outcome.

“I think what Diana experienced at the hands of the press was just unheard of.”

Ms Bowie said: “The way in which he said, ‘she’s only done good things and she’s only been criticised’ and I think that rings true to what Harry has said about Meghan as well.”

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe has previously said he hopes the couple will recognise what went wrong in her strategy.

He noted Diana tragically only had Mohamed al-Fayed’s security team when she died.

Speaking on True Royalty TV, journalist Kate Thornton said: “Diana did also at times feel unprotected.”

Mr Larcombe added: “Let’s not forget another parallel that Diana did.

“She became so paranoid that her Metropolitan Police security detail were leaking stories that she sacked them all.

“She put them tragically at the mercy of Mohamed al-Fayed’s security team.

“We know how that ended.

“There are quite shocking and chilling similarities in the situation that Harry is now in.

“I hope that he is sensible enough to acknowledge where Princess Diana actually went wrong in her strategy.

“There were times where she did make mistakes.”
