Both Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson appeared to struggle to adjust to marrying into the Royal Family at one point or another. Channel 5’s royal documentary, Fergie Vs Diana: Royal Wives at War, explored the difficulties both women faced and the strain put on their relationship. Some royal commentators claimed that Princess Diana accused Sarah Ferguson of being a manipulator due to how she interacted with members of the Royal Family.

This appeared to create a tense atmosphere between the two as Princess Diana had claimed she had struggled within the Royal Family.

The narrator Glynis Barber said: “After a rocky start, Sarah Ferguson fully settled into royal life.

“The differences between the royal wives were stark and the once close friendship showed signs of strain.”

Royal expert Tom Quinn reflected on how Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s relationship developed and changed as time went on in the Royal Family.

He said: “Princess Diana was aware that Sarah was a very skilled manipulator of people to some extent.

“This is because she famously said that Sarah had wooed the Royal Family.

“She added that Fergie knew exactly what she was doing when she said certain things to certain members of the Royal Family.”

Royal commentator Kate Nicholl also explored the souring relationship between the two royal wives.

She said: “Princess Diana admitted that she got terribly jealous of Fergie.

“The Queen and Sarah seemed to have an easier rapport.

“Sarah made falling into this Royal Family look easy while Princess Diana had said she was struggling to survive.”

Behavioural Psychologist Jo Hemmings also weighed in on the impact this dynamic had on the Princess.

She said: “There was a point at which that Prince Charles said to Princess Diana, why can’t you be more like Fergie.

“Now for someone who has self-esteem that is already low, who is feeling very vulnerable, that wasn’t just a rebuke that would have been one of the most cutting hurtful remarks that her husband could have made to her.”

The narrator closed by noting that from this point, Princess Diana did attempt to behave more like her friend Fergie.
