Royal author Katie Nicholl believes the public is creating a connection with Princess Charlotte thanks to her parent’s decision to release a few snaps of the little royal and bring her along during selected public events. The expert told OK! magazine: “Allowing the public to see photos and footage of Charlotte is fuelling her popularity further and helping the public connect with her – especially all those charming moments, like when she poked her tongue out at her grandfather, Michael Middleton, at the King’s Cup Regatta in 2019!”
Kate and Prince William are careful to protect the privacy of their three children and only release a few official snaps and clips of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis throughout the year.
The public was delighted to see a new portrait of Princess Charlotte over the weekend, released by the palace to mark her sixth birthday.
A few days earlier, the children of Kate and William all appeared in a family video celebrating the Duke and Duchess’ 10th wedding anniversary.
Pictures of the children have traditionally been shared only on milestone anniversaries, birthdays and over Christmas.
However, throughout the years, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have started showing a glimpse of the world of royal engagements to their children, which in turn allowed the public to see Charlotte, Louis and George out and about.
In early December 2020, the Cambridges attended a special performance of Pantoland at the London Palladium.
A few months earlier, Charlotte, George and Louis quizzed Sir David Attenborough in an adorable video focused on the natural world.
The clip, which saw Princess Charlotte speaking about her love for spiders, was released a few days after Kensington Palace shared snaps of the naturalist with the Cambridge family.
As it was revealed, Sir David had travelled to Kate and William’s London home for a private screening of his latest documentary.
Before the pandemic, Prince George and Princess Charlotte had already been introduced to the world of royal duties.
On Christmas Day 2019, the two young royals joined for the first time their parents and other senior members of the Firm at the 11am service in Sandringham.
After it ended, they took part in their first walkabout, during which they met and spoke with a few royal fans.
Charlotte delighted the crowd when she hugged a royal well-wisher who gifted her a pink inflatable flamingo.
But, despite their young age, Charlotte and George had already been on various royal visits.
Prince George accompanied his parents during their tour to Australia and New Zealand in 2014.
Two years later, Kate and William travelled to Canada with Charlotte and George.
During that tour, the little royals were spotted playing at the Government House in Victoria, which was filled with balloons to please the children.
The following year, George and Charlotte accompanied their parents abroad again, visiting Germany and Poland.
Prince Louis is the only member of the Cambridge family who is still yet to travel abroad with his parents for an official visit because of his young age and the past 13 months of a ban on most foreign trips due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Ms Nicholl said: “In the last year or so we’ve seen Charlotte and her siblings emerge more onto the public stage – a deliberate move by William and Kate, who initially protected them from the spotlight but are becoming more relaxed now.
“Even back in 2016, when they took George and Charlotte on the official royal tour of Canada, they were giving them both an early introduction to what their parents do, and what their lives may one day look like.”
