The young royals have been homeschooled by Kate and Prince William at their Norfolk mansion Anmer Hall since schools were ordered to shut on March 20. On Sunday Boris Johnson unveiled his plan to send some year groups back to lessons from Monday June 1 “at the earliest”. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 will be the first to return if it is safe to do so.

Charlotte, who is in Reception, will head back to Thomas’s Battersea, according to the plan, while George, who is in Year 2, will have to stay at home.

However, as Thomas’s Battersea is a private school, it may not choose to re-open their doors until the start of the next school year in September.

The Prime Minister’s vision for children to return to school in phases has been blasted by the National Education Union.

The union said his plan was “nothing short of reckless”.

In his much-anticipated address to the nation on Sunday night, Mr Johnson laid out his plan

He said: “At the earliest by June 1, after half term, we believe we may be in a position to begin the phased reopening of shops and to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages.”

Since entering lockdown the Cambridges have kept out of the spotlight but have managed to stay in touch with the outside world through technology.

In March William and Kate uploaded an adorable video of their three children taking part in the weekly national applause for key workers.

And in April the family-of-five was filmed clapping for carers on The Big Night In to raise cash for charity.

Photos were also released to mark Charlotte’s fifth birthday in Lockdown and Prince Louis’ second birthday.

Kate gave a rare update on her homeschooling routine with George, six, and five-year-old Charlotte during an interview with the BBC.

She said she was amaze at the stamina of her children to keep going all day with lessons and activities and never tire out.

And she revealed she had continued their homeschooling regime through the Easter holidays, not telling George and Charlotte about the planned two-week break from learning.

The Duchess, 38, is now in her eighth week of homeschooling.

In a recent interview the mother-of-three explained how she and her two eldest children were trying to learn the words of Dame Vera Lynn’s song We’ll Meet Again.

She explained how it was part of a challenge to parent and pupils to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

In a video call with residents at an East Sussex care home, Kate said George was learning about the Second World War.

The royal wife said: “The school has set all the children a challenge and they’re currently trying to learn the lyrics to the song We’ll Meet Again… so it’s been really lovely having that playing every day.”

She added: “George is just starting to learn about the Second World War.

“He would be really honoured to come and speak to you, so maybe another time George could have a quick chat with you to hear all your stories as well.”
