Princess Charlotte has started her first day at school today, accompanied by her parents and older brother Prince George. Charlotte, four, is in reception and shook her teacher Helen Haslem’s hand this morning as she nervously tugged on her ponytail, eager to get started on the big day ahead. Prince William told Ms Haslem that Charlotte was “very excited” to start school, where George will be going into year one.

Charlotte looked a picture with her hair pulled back into a ponytail, wearing her brand new school uniform as she walked into Thomas’s school in Battersea.

She wore a pinafore, white blouse, black shoes and white socks and mum Kate carried her school bag as they walked into the school.

Charlotte will join a class of 21 children at the £6,429 a term – or £19,287 a year – school.

However, as Prince George already attends, the fees for Charlotte are slightly less with a sibling discount at £6,305 a term, or £18,915 a year.

Charlotte had already personalised her schoolbag, as a pink shiny unicorn keychain could be seen dangling from the satchel as Kate walked into the school.

The unicorn appeared to be covered in pink sequins and could be seen glittering as Charlotte waved to the waiting press.

The adorable addition to Charlotte’s schoolbag could something to reassure her, as the first day at school can be quite scary.

Parents.com recommends sending your child to school for their first day with a little memento of home, to help them should they feel nervous.

However, despite first hiding behind mum Kate, Charlotte seemed at ease as she met her teacher and walked into school for the first time.

She tugged on her ponytail and smiled as she shook hands with Ms Haslem.

Charlotte will have the added comfort of Prince George, who is said to be excited to have her at school, and will look after her according to one royal expert.

Royal biographer Penny Junor told Hello! magazine: “Prince George is a very protective and lovely older brother.

“I’m sure he’ll look after his little sister and take great pride in showing her the ropes.”

Both young royals will be known by their friends and teachers as Charlotte Cambridge and George Cambridge.

The surname is derived from their parents’ titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
