Charlene married Prince Albert in 2011 and became Princess of Monaco. It was reported early on that Charlene was struggling with royal life and often looked unhappy during official events. She later acknowledged that people pick up on her stern look, commenting: “Well, sometimes it’s hard to smile, they don’t know what’s going on in the background.”

Express.co.uk spoke to Maddalena Mastrostefano, an expert in European monarchy about Prince Charlene.

“The royal wedding hauled people into Monaco and it boosted the economy a lot, but then it sort of died there,” Maddalena explained.

“I think she [Charlene] made a huge faux pas, that especially royal watchers have not really forgiven her for, in 2013 when she went to Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s wedding.

“She was supposed to represent the monarchy in Monaco and it was one of her first solo engagements on a big, international stage and she completely missed the memo on the dress code.

“It was supposed to be tiaras and orders, she arrived with a brown dress and that was it.”

“No tiara, despite the fact she has received two as a wedding present. One was from her husband and one was from the Monegasque population.

She added: “She has an order from Monaco that she has acquired when she entered the family but she didn’t wear it.

“I think that was a really bad PR move because the Monegasque people really didn’t feel like she was caring to represent them as best as she could.”

Prince Harry: Royals hoping he 'doesn't stick knife in' with book

Princess Charlene has hit the headlines recently due to her absence in public life.

The Princess travelled to South Africa on an official visit in May, but contracted an infection that led to her being “grounded” there for six months.

The infection led to Charlene undergoing two operations.

She said in an interview: “[It’s] very frustrating, terribly frustrating. I can’t wait to get back to them, I can’t wait to see my children.”

Charlene revealed: “It’s the longest period I’ve actually been away from Europe, let alone my children, but I’m FaceTiming them most days and they’ve been here and will be returning to see me again after my procedure.

“It’s an amazing opportunity [to be here] but I’m very sad I can’t be with my children this summer in Europe.”

She returned to Monaco last month, but was soon taken to a treatment facility “outside of Monaco.”
