Charlene has withdrawn from public life to recover from health issues after spending months away from Monaco in South Africa. A resident who lives in the principality, who is close with the Grimaldi family, told The New York Post that the former Olympian was always seen as an outsider.

The insider said: “She either had this strange air of detachment, like she didn’t care how she was perceived by anyone in Monaco, or else she seemed miserable but without the agency to do anything about it.

“She was very hard to read. She wasn’t like the typical Monaco trophy wife. She wasn’t a gold digger.”

Charlene spent six months in South Africa with a severe ear, nose and throat infection before returning to Monaco.

However, soon after her return her husband Prince Albert said she was receiving treatment in a facility “outside of Monaco”.

He said Charlene was suffering profound “exhaustion, both emotional and physical”.

Albert told US magazine People that her state is the result “of several factors which are private matters”.

He added: “She was clearly exhausted, physically and emotionally.

“She was overwhelmed and couldn’t face official duties, life in general or even family life.”

He said the Princess was “grounded” in South Africa due to her ENT infection.

Albert said: “Obviously there were consequences of her different surgeries and the procedures she underwent in the last few months.

“That certainly was a factor, but at this point, I prefer not to comment further.

“I can say she was suffering incredible fatigue.

“She hadn’t slept well in a number of days and she wasn’t eating at all well.

“She has lost a lot of weight, which made her vulnerable to other potential ailments. A cold or the flu or God help us, Covid.”

Albert also denied Charlene’s absence is due to their marriage.

He said: “Because I know there are rumours out there, let me say: This is not Covid.

“And it’s not cancer-related. It’s not a personal relationship issue.

“And if you want to discuss another speculation, it isn’t related to plastic surgery or facial work at all.”
