Princess Eugenie welcomed her first child August Philip Hawkes Brooksbank to the world this month after giving birth to the Queen’s ninth great-grandchild. She and husband Jack Brooksbank shared the news on Instagram, and released a number of informal photos of the happy family. The couple have received a wealth of public support, with well-wishers from across the world quick to congratulate the new parents, including the likes of Eugenie’s mother Sarah Ferguson – affectionately known as Fergie.

This, coupled with Eugenie and her sister Beatrice’s larger roles within the Royal Family, has boosted the siblings’ popularity.

But before this wave of adulation, the sisters admitted to struggling to cope with the attention that comes as part of being a member of the most recognisable family in the world.

Royal experts, including Marlene Koenig, have argued that Eugenie will likely want a “very quiet” upbringing for her son, which was epitomised when she elected to not give her child a title.

Ms Koenig also hinted to Express.co.uk that the spotlight would not be on August as much as her mother when she was young, because he would be a “great-grandchild of a sovereign, not even a grandchild of the sovereign”.

Their wish for privacy was also highlighted after they moved back into Frogmore Cottage, Eugenie’s cousin Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s British residence.

The estate was Harry and Meghan’s home when they welcomed their first son Archie, and is close to where Fergie and Eugenie’s father Prince Andrew live, in the Royal Lodge.

This desire for a more private life for August, may have come from the difficulties both Eugenie and Beatrice experienced during their younger years.

And in a heartbreaking warning to royals who are trying to work, while representing the crown, Beatrice admitted it had been a struggle to balance the two.

Speaking to Vogue in 2018, Beatrice said “it’s hard to navigate situations like these because there is no precedent, there is no protocol”.

She added: “We are the first: we are young women trying to build careers and have personal lives, and we’re also princesses and doing all of this in the public eye.”

In the same interview Eugenie also discussed how she and Beatrice had been taught how to handle the intense glare of the media by their parents.

She recalled how there had once been a “horrible article” written about Beatrice, which “really upset” her.

The sisters were just about to go out, but Beatrice “had a bit of a wobble and cried”, Eugenie explained, admitting she had to “look after” her older sibling.

Eugenie added: “And then about an hour later, I had a wobble and started crying and Bea was there for me.”

Before Eugenie and Beatrice both wed their respective husbands, they were known for their party-going sensibilities.

This will be reviewed in tonight’s Channel 5 documentary Beatrice and Eugenie: The Pampered Princess?

The sisters are incredibly close, with Eugenie looking up to her sister, even claiming that “when we were young, I used to always make Bea go into parties first”, as she lacked the confidence of Beatrice.

But, Eugenie argued, after watching Beatrice interact with others, Andrew and Fergie’s youngest daughter would “get louder and louder as she made me more confident”.

They also have a tight bond with Fergie, and in an interview with Hello! magazine three years ago, she paid tribute to her mother’s strength.

She added: “We’ve been through some incredibly stressful times together as a family and every single minute she created joy.

“I am so lucky that I get to learn from her every single day.

“I’m inspired by her ability to give, even when she’s going through something hard.”

Beatrice and Eugenie: The Pampered Princess? airs tonight on Channel 5 from 10.15pm.
