The pair discussed navigating the unique scenario of growing up as royalty in a world defined by social media – for which there is “no precedent”. Their comments have been unearthed days after Eugenie, 30, left hospital as a mother for the first time with husband Jack Brooksbank, 35.
Beatrice, 32, made headlines last summer when she wed Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 38, at a small ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It took place at the Royal Chapel of All Saints, Royal Lodge in Windsor.
In the 2018 joint interview with Vogue, the Queen’s granddaughters said that they perceive themselves as “real”.
But they did touch on “mockery” and criticism they are forced to endure as part of their spot in the public eye – and more specifically an Instagram world.
Beatrice said: “It’s hard to navigate situations like these because there is no precedent, there is no protocol.
“We are the first: we are young women trying to build careers and have personal lives, and we’re also princesses, and doing all of this in the public eye.”
Eugenie, who wed later that year, added: “We want to show people who we are as working, young, royal women, but also not to be afraid of putting ourselves out there.
“Nowadays it’s so easy to recoil when you see a perfect image on Instagram – but it’s important that it’s real.
“We’re real.”
Eugenie described a moment when the pressure of being watched so closely dawned on her sister, as she encountered a “horrible article”.
The pair were at a Buckingham Palace garden party when the incident happened.
Eugenie said: “There was a horrible article that had been written about Beatrice and she got really upset.
