The Queen and Prince Philip’s only daughter, Princess Anne, is often dubbed as Britain’s hardest-working royal. In 2019 she completed 506 royal engagements, following just behind her brother and heir to the throne, Prince Charles. Known for her no-fuss attitude, Anne often flies under the royal radar, but a new documentary will give fans an insight into the life of the Princess Royal never seen before.

Princess Anne was born in 1950, and is the second child of the Queen and Prince Philip.

This year Anne will be celebrating her 70th birthday, and to mark the occasion a special 90-minute documentary will be aired on ITV.

At the moment a date for airing has not been officially confirmed, but ITV have confirmed the documentary will be called Princess Royal: Anne at 70.

ITV said in a statement the documentary will give viewers “unprecedented access” to the life of the Princess Royal behind the scenes.

ITV added: “She was the first daughter of a monarch to go to school, the first royal Olympian and the first child of a monarch to insist her children were called ‘Mr’ and ‘Miss’.”

The documentary will cover the ups and the downs of Princess Anne’s remarkable life.

The Princess herself will discuss her famous kidnapping attempt in 1974.

Royal fans will also be hopeful to hear more about Anne’s career as a professional sportswoman, as well as her decision not to give her children royal titles.

Princess Anne will also have conversations with those who know her best on-screen.

Anne will be joined by her two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence will also be making an appearance.

Nicolas Kent, Creative Director for Oxford Films and Executive Producer for Princess Royal: Anne at 70, said it has been “fascinating” following Princess Anne for the last year.

Mr Kent said: “It’s been fascinating, especially in such an eventful and significant year, to follow The Princess Royal and hear from her family, friends and colleagues, many of whom are speaking about her for the first time.”

It is not yet known whether Anne’s eldest brother Prince Charles will speak about his sister during the documentary.

But Anne will be receiving the same honour for her 70th as her brother did, as he was also filmed for a special documentary for his 70th birthday.

The BBC documentary, Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, aired on BBC One in 2018, and it too gave insight into the busy life of the Prince of Wales.

Despite turning 70 this year, it appears Anne has inherited her parents’ strong work ethic as she is still a full-time working member of the Royal Family.

In 2018 Princess Anne completed more royal engagements than any other member of the Royal Family.

Anne completed 447 royal engagements, and she smashed this number by adding another 59 engagements in 2019.

Due to the pandemic Anne’s total number of engagements will understandably likely be lower this year, but the Princess Royal has not stopped with her royal duties while on lockdown.

Along with other members of the Royal Family, Anne has regularly appeared via video link and phone call to thank the public and key workers for their efforts during the pandemic.
