Princess Anne teaches the Queen how to use Zoom for first time

During lockdown, families across the world have been helping their elderly relatives up their technology game with Zoom calls – and the Queen is no exception.

Last month, the 94-year-old monarch dialled in to her first official video call from the Oak Room in Windsor Castle to mark National Carers Week.

Like many families, her daughter helped her get up and running on Zoom, which has become the video calling app of choice for most during the pandemic.

In a preview of an ITV documentary to mark Princess Anne’s 70th birthday, a rare and sweet exchange between the pair was shared on social media leaving fans touched.

The video, uploaded on Twitter by ITV News’ Royal Editor Chris Ship, starts with Princess Anne waiting for her mother to join the call along with the carers.

The Queen’s assistant private secretary Tom Laing-Baker says: ‘It’s Tom here. I’m just going to introduce Her Majesty The Queen.’

Princess Anne is then heard asking her mother: ‘Ah, good morning? Windsor?’

The Queen, sat comfortably dressed in pearls and a floral dress, responds saying: ‘Good morning. I’m very glad to have been able to join you.’

Her daughter interjects quickly to make sure her mum is using the app correctly: ‘Can you see everybody? You should have six people on your screen.’

When the Queen responds saying she can only see four, her daughter laughs: ‘Actually you don’t need me you know what I look like!’

Social media users have been left touched and amused by the exchange, with one saying: ‘One is amused, awesome.’

Another wrote: ‘Brilliant. Princess Anne is great and it’s been lovely watching the Queen Zoom during lockdown. Can’t wait to watch this.’

The call, which took place on June 4, saw the monarch and her daughter speak to four carers about the difficulties they have faced during the coronavirus pandemic.

Her Majesty also had some help from her private secretary who has been staying at Windsor with the monarch as part of a reduced household dubbed ‘HMS Bubble’ – to set up the arrangements.

One carer on the call said it was surreal to be sitting in her home while talking to two Royals on Zoom.

Alexandra Atkins, 24, from Swansea, said: ‘To have them both talking face to face to us, was just unreal. It hit me that I was sitting in my bedroom talking to the Princess Royal and the Queen.’
