Princess Anne, 70, carried out her first royal engagement since Prince Philip’s funeral on Wednesday as she visited three Gloucestershire hospitals. During the outing, The Princess Royal opened a memorial garden for those who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pictures of the royal showed her putting on a brave face as she was given a tour of the garden.

The Royal Family shared details and photos of the outing on social media.

The Royal Family’s official tweet read:  “The Princess Royal has visited three @gloshospitals to thank staff for their hard work over the last year.

“HRH opened a new commemorative garden which has been dedicated to loved ones lost to the pandemic, and contains hundreds of wire dandelions, in memory of each patient.”

Anne’s outing fell just four days after the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral and coincided with the Queen’s 95th birthday.

While the Royal Family are still in mourning following Philip’s death on April 9, Anne did not dress in black for the engagement.

Anne was known to be extremely close to her father and is said to have inherited his non-nonsense attitude.

During the engagement, Anne thanked NHS staff for their extraordinary work during the pandemic.

Ahead of the Duke’s funeral last Saturday, Anne shared an adoring tribute to her father.

The Princess Royal’s message was shared on the Royal Family’s official social media channels and touched on their special relationship.

Anne’s tribute to Prince Philip read: “You know it’s going to happen but you are never really ready.

“My father has been my teacher, my supporter and my critic, but mostly it is his example of a life well lived and service freely given that I most wanted to emulate.”

Anne’s moving tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh continued: “His ability to treat every person as an individual in their own right with their own skills comes through all the organisations with which he was involved.

“I regard it as an honour and a privilege to have been asked to follow in his footsteps and it has been a pleasure to have kept him in touch with their activities.

“I know how much he meant to them, in the UK, across the Commonwealth and in the wider world.

“I would like to emphasise how much the family appreciate the messages and memories of so many people whose lives he also touched.  We will miss him but he leaves a legacy which can inspire us all.”

Princess Anne lives in Gloucestershire on the Gatcombe Park Estate which is also home to her two grown-up children Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips.

Anne welcomed a new grandchild to the world last month as Zara gave birth to a baby boy on March 21.

In a touching tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh Zara and her husband, Mike named their son Lucas Philip.

Zara, Mike, Princess Anne and Peter were among the 30 guests at Prince Philip’s funeral.
