Princess Anne paid a loving tribute to her late mother during a royal visit to Uganda. The Queen’s daughter wore a sapphire and pearl brooch that had once belonged to Her Majesty at a dinner she hosted for Yoweri K Museveni – the President of the Republic of Uganda – and his daughter Natasha at the state residence in the capital, Kampala.

The event took place on Tuesday night at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Uganda.

The Princess Royal, 72, is currently on a royal tour with her husband Sir Tim Laurence, 67, her first trip of this kind since the Queen passed away in September.

At the dinner, the Princess wore a navy silk printed wrap dress and matching patent heels, along with Empress Maria Feodorovna’s Sapphire Brooch which she inherited from her mother.

The stunning piece is made up of a sapphire surrounded by two rows of diamonds and a removable pearl droplet which hangs underneath.

Crisscut Magazine has valued the brooch at £500,000, reported the Daily Mail.

It was first purchased by the Princess of Wales in 1866 as a wedding gift to her sister Empress Maria Feodorovna, who passed away in 1928.

Following her death Queen Mary bought the brooch for £2,375, with Queen Elizabeth receiving it upon her accession to the throne in 1952.

Sharing images from the royal dinner on Twitter, the President wrote: “I was hosted to a dinner by Her Royal Highness, Princess Royal and her husband Sir Timothy Laurence at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Kampala.

“We talked about the different patronages she has come to support here. I welcome her and wish her good luck.”

During the royal visit Princess Anne opened the first commercial bank in the Nakivale Refugee settlement in her role as patron of Opportunity International.

She is set to return with Sir Tim to the UK on Friday, but before then the couple will spend time female students complete the ‘Safe Way, Right Way’ HGV truck driver training programme as part of her work with Transaid.

The organisation helps to provide safe and sustainable transport, and was co-founded by the princess alongside Save the Children and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) 25 years ago.

Princess Anne will be back to work by November 1 as she will visit the restored Junk Yacht Boleh at Haslar Marina in Gosport, Hampshire.
