The Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence were there to meet representatives of organisations of which the Queen was patron. The 72-year-old royal appeared to be in good spirits as she viewed the many floral tributes and spoke to well-wishers.

Holly McBride, four, gave Anne a bunch of pink daisies – and the royal described the flowers left by the public as “really and truly out of this world”.

The Queen’s only daughter has told how she was at her bedside when she died last Thursday.

Despite the sad circumstances, her engagement with the people of Glasgow was clear, as was her close connection with children in the crowd.

She later told representatives from organisations of which the Queen served as patron she felt “very welcome” in the city.

Hilary Harris of Glasgow’s Lambhill Stables, a community organisation, called the Princess “impressive”, saying: “She sat with us, spoke individually to everyone, asked them all what they did, and gave them plenty opportunity to speak to her.

“She knew everything about the organisation and led the conversation.”
