Princess Anne is the Queen and Prince Philip’s only daughter. She is 14th in line to the throne and has held the title of Princess Royal since 1987. Anne is praised for her high-profile charity work and her career as an equestrian. She is often ranked as one of the hardest-working royals having undertaken 506 engagements in 2019. But who is the Princess Royal married to?

Princess Anne will celebrate her 70th birthday on August 15.

In a new documentary made to mark her birthday, she admitted to spending part of lockdown teaching the Queen about new technology.

On a video call to support the nation’s carers, during National Carers’ Week, Anne is trying to link up with Windsor Castle on a Zoom call.

Speaking on the call the Queen’s Assistant Private Secretary Tom Laing-Baker said: “It’s Tom here. I’m just going to introduce Her Majesty The Queen.”

Anne said: ”Ah. Good morning at Windsor.”

The Queen said: “Good morning. I’m very glad to have been able to join you.”

Anne asked: “Can you see everybody? You should have six people on your screen.”

The Queen said: “Yes, well I can see four anyway!”

Anne said: “Actually, you don’t need me. You know what I look like!”

Princess Anne also discusses her children and granddaughters in the ITV documentary.

She spoke about the challenges of home-schooling for her four granddaughters during lockdown.

She said: “I’ve offered to try and do some outdoor learning but so far it hasn’t been taken up on!”

Anne added: “When I was small we had to pick things and then press them and identify them. I don’t think anybody does that anymore.

“And I was thinking: ‘Ah, it might be a good idea if we started doing that again.’

“I haven’t seen hide nor hair of them at that suggestion!”

Anne’s two children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall are a result of her first marriage to Mark Phillips whom she married in November 1973.

Mr Phillips was a lieutenant in the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards and after their marriage he was appointed a personal aide-de-camp to the Queen.

Mark was offered an earldom upon his marriage, but he declined the offer meaning his children are born without courtesy titles.

The couple announced their intention to separate in August 1989 and divorced in April 1992.

Princess Anne met her second husband Timothy Laurence while he was serving on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Their relationship began in early 1989, three years after he was appointed as an equerry to the Queen.

Princess Anne and Timothy Laurence have the second-longest marriage in the Royal Family at 28 years this November.

They are only beaten by the Queen and Prince Philip who have been married for 73 years in November.

Who is Timothy Laurence?

Sir Timothy Laurence is one of the lesser-known members of the Royal Family, despite being married to Princess Anne since 1992.

Sir Timothy was born in South London to Commander Guy Laurence, a salesman of marine engines, and his wife Barbara in March 1955.

He went on to study at New Beacon Preparatory School and then at Sevenoaks School in Kent, before receiving a Naval Scholarship to the University of Durham.

He graduated with a degree in Geography before enrolling in the Royal Navy as a midshipman.

Sir Timothy was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant, then Lieutenant and finally Lieutenant Commander, serving on various renowned battleships and minesweepers.

In 1986, he was appointed as Equerry to Queen Elizabeth, a post he occupied for three years.

His relationship with Anne became public in 1989, when letters written to the Princess Royal by the then Commander Laurence were stolen and published in the newspapers.

Princess Anne and Commander Laurence were married in a Church of Scotland ceremony at the Crathie Parish Church near Balmoral.

The two chose to marry in Scotland because the Church of Scotland permits the marriage of divorced people whose former spouses are still alive.

Sir Timothy retired from the Navy in 2010 and chose to focus instead on non-executive, charitable interests.

He occasionally joins Princess Anne as she undertakes official royal work, but is not a working member of the Royal Family.

Sir Timothy has no children of his own, but is said to be very close with Peter and Zara.
