To mark her 70th birthday next month, Princess Anne allowed cameras to follow her for a special ITV documentary. Sunday Times Royal Correspondent, Roya Nikkhah, spoke to ITV Lorraine about how the programme captured the real woman behind the “working facade”. The Princess Royal’s no-nonsense approach has become something widely known and admired about her.

Ms Nikkhah explained: “She knows her mind, she knows what she wants and she’ll get it over in a very economic way.”

Host Christine Lampard described the royal’s direct approach as “quite humorous” and a trait she liked.

The royal commentator offered further insight: “It’s interesting because I wrote a big feature on her a couple of weeks ago for the Sunday Times and delved into her world for a few weeks.

“I talked to a lot of people who know her and who work with her, all of whom say the same thing.”

She continued: “They all quite like that direct approach.

“But they also all said that behind the working facade, Princess Anne is much funnier and much warmer than I think you see on public engagements.

“Her former Private Secretary, Nick Wright, said to me that when you’ve done something wrong, you’ll get a look and then she’ll move on.

“That’s all, and that’s what people like.”

The documentary also shows the Princess Royal in sessions with Frances Segelman, a sculptor who was commissioned to create a bust of her.

The completed sculpture has been gifted to one of her patronages, UK Youth.

The charity said it was “elated” to receive the piece in honour of Anne’s upcoming 70th birthday and her work with the charity.

The rare behind-the-scenes look into the Princess’ life also included an insight into her lockdown activities.

During it, she speaks about the “challenges” of home-schooling for her grandchildren.

The royal says: “They face the same challenges as everybody else in terms of home schooling.

“Actually that is a challenge wherever you are.

“I’ve offered to try and do some outdoor learning but so far it hasn’t been taken up on.”
